An imbalance in muscle strength between agonists (quadriceps) and antagonists (hamstrings) in the lower limb, have been shown to be a contributing factor to non-contact injuries. Bilateral asymmetry has also been shown to increase injury risk. Therefore, it is essential that conditioning programs are appropriately designed to address, or prevent, the incidence of muscle imbalances and subsequently reduce the risk of injury. This article aims to review the injury risks associated with lower limb muscle imbalance, and provide practical guidelines on how to address and prevent muscle imbalances in the lower limbs.
