UKSCA has been working with the Armed Forces for a number of years, delivering education and training through both remote and bespoke face-to-face workshops to their Physical Training Instructors (PTIs).
The Armed Forces recognise that introducing S&C principles and practice into their PTI work, can not only improve the performance of soldiers, sailors and airmen in their occupational roles, but also prevent costly career ending injuries.
As well as delivering education and training, our work with the Army also included a joint project in 2016-17 to revamp their entry level All Arms PTI course curriculum to bring it in line with current S&C best practice and the production of their AAPTI course manual.
Since 2023, we have been working with both the Army and Navy to embed the new S&C Trainer diploma into their established PTI education pathways.
In 2023-24 we ran a pilot, embedding the 5 S&C Trainer assessments into the Army’s second level PTI course.
The first S&C Trainer assessment was conducted in week 3 of their course (October 2023), and the final assessment in week 27.
This was delivered by UKSCA Licensed Assessors, not their own staff.
From this first cohort, 8 PTIs have now gained the S&C Trainer diploma, with 1 needing to re-take his case study assessment.
Following this pilot, in 2025 the S&C Trainer Diploma will be offered to all Army PTIs, enabling them to both set and raise standards of practice as well as providing individuals with a qualification that is recognised outside of the Army.
In a similar model to the Army, the Navy have embedded S&C trainer into their PTI instructor course.
Starting in May 2024, 16x PTIs are now part way through their S&C Trainer assessments, looking to complete the qualification in October 2024.
These first assessments have been delivered by UKSCA Licensed Assessors, not their own staff.
Running alongside this, we are taking 6 of their senior PTIs through a programme for them to become UKSCA Licensed Assessors. This will enable the Navy to deliver S&C Trainer more flexibly as an independent partner. This programme has 3 steps:
